Creative formats
.JPEG – Image file of still images only
We can work with simple graphics. A basic advertisement can achieve high impact in a simple JPEG format.
.GIF and animated GIF
Animated banners would normally be supplied as an animated GIF, although these can also be still images.
.SWF (animations created in Flash)
The most high-impact adverts can be created in Flash in .SWF format. Not only can you create animations but files can also be made to encourage interactivity from the user.
Tracking click-throughs in .SWF creatives
The only way to track the performance of a Flash creative is by implementing a tracking variable in the .fla file itself.
To add the variable you need to replace the hard-coded URL link in the Object Actions panel and replace it with the variable ‘clickTag’ as an expression.
In more detail:
Open the .fla file that is used to build the creative
Add a new layer on top of the movie itself
In the new layer draw a rectangle that covers the entire movie stage, ensuring that this runs throughout the whole length of the movie.
Convert into a Button symbol and move Keyframe content to Hit option.
Name button instance.
Create an actions layer and open the actions panel and use the onRelease and GetURL functions and assign to the following:
Movie event: onRelease
Object: instance name
GetURL: Use the variable here and simply type in clickTag , select expression
Window: _blank
Once the movie is complete, it can be published to create a .SWF file. Don’t forget to create a .GIF version (animated or still) of the movie which you also need to supply for users who don’t have Flash player installed on their computer.
Along with the .SWF file we require a text document telling us which version of Flash the movie was published as (recommended is version 8) with the click through URL to be used which we will implement into our advert server. Please note that we cannot accept any adverts that include hard coded URLs in the Flash movie, as we will not be able to track the performance of the ad.
